The World Academy of Sciences (TWAS) for the Advancement of Sciences in Developing Countries

The World Academy of Sciences (TWAS) is a global science academy based in Trieste, Italy, working to advance science and engineering for sustainable prosperity in the developing world. KFAS and TWAS have signed an agreement to contribute to the academy’s Endowment Fund as well as yearly contributions for the academy’s capacity-building activities and their quarterly newsletters.

Each year, TWAS and its partners offer over 600 fellowships to scientists in the developing world who want to pursue PhDs and postdoctoral research. The academy’s prizes and awards are among the most prestigious for scientific work in the developing world. The academy distributes more than USD1 million in research grants annually to individual scientists and research groups. It also supports visiting scientists and provides funding for regional and international science meetings.

KFAS’s contribution to TWAS focuses on two areas: scientific capacity-building and publication.

Grants from KFAS support the enrollment of promising young scientists with a strong record of performance in the TWAS Young Affiliates program. Funds go toward both Regional Prizes and Young Arab Scientist Prizes for acclaimed and emerging scientists in the Arab world. KFAS also makes it possible for young scientists to participate in major global conferences and events relevant to their field.

KFAS supports the publication and dissemination of scientific media through the ongoing development and operation of TWAS’s website and other communications, particularly related to enrolment in TWAS programs and monitoring their impact. KFAS also uses grants to assist the TWAS Newsletter, recognized as an authoritative publication on issues related to science, technology and innovation in the developing world. It is also a platform for building bridges between scientists and policymakers in the Global South and between communities in in the Global North and South.
